Dr. Anurita Kapur was invited to and attended several Memorials of 9/11 in New York City on Sunday 11 September 2016 at the World Trade Center on Ground Zero, New York City. The Memorial was attended by many high ranking U.S. Government Officials including Former First Lady and Former Secretary of State - Hon. Mrs. Hillary Clinton who unfortunately fell sick and had to be escorted out for medical care. Anurita gave statements on the channels present, "It is very sad that this act of terrorism happened and we shall definitely not forget. The recitations of the nearly 3,000 names of the dead rose toward a cloudy sky over lower Manhattan on this Sunday morning like an epic poem chronicling one of America's saddest days. Bagpipes played and bells tolled in solemn tributes. Fifteen years ago, the United States changed forever when four airliners crashed into the Twin Towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a field outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The age of terror had begun. My sincere prayers and condolences for the victims and their families and our home sweet home the United States of America. I am proud to be an American. United We Shall Stand to protect our homeland." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- According to highly reliable sources some facts to know about the 9/11 Attacks: Today, Sunday marks the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, that killed 2,977 people in New York, the Pentagon and in a field in rural Pennsylvania. The attacks and the reaction to them have shaped U.S. policy for the last 15 years, leaving a nation that is far more vigilant and jittery about terrorism. Yet for all of the talk about 9/11, many elements of the attacks and the actions leading up to them have receded from the public memory. Here listed below are the things you may have forgotten about 9/11: 1. We don't know how the hijackers got into the cockpits of some of the planes The comprehensive report of the commission created to investigate the attacks, which was published in 2004, said no one could determine how the hijackers were able to get into the cockpits of the four commercial airliners they hijacked. A flight attendant on American Flight 11 "speculated that they had 'jammed their way' in," the 9/11 report said. "Perhaps the terrorists stabbed the flight attendants to get a cockpit key, to force one of them to open the cockpit door, or to lure the captain or first officer out of the cockpit." Once the hijackers gained control of American 11, they guided it toward New York's World Trade Center towers, where it stuck the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46 a.m. All 81 passengers, including the five hijackers, and nine crew members died in the crash, along with an unknown number of people in the tower. 2. Passengers and crew aboard the planes provided critical information Those aboard the four hijacked flights — American 11, United 175, American 77 and United 93 — called family and friends from their cellphones or used the aircrafts' radio communications to report the hijackings. That alerted authorities to the hijackings and enabled them to understand why they could not track the planes after their navigation systems were turned off. American 77, which departed Washington's Dulles airport, was hijacked near Indianapolis and then turned back toward Washington. Its destination: the Pentagon. Passenger Barbara Olson, the wife of Solicitor General Ted Olson, called her husband to report "that the flight had been hijacked, and the hijackers had knives and box cutters." American 77 crashed into the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m., killing all 64 people on board, including the five hijackers. Information gathered from the calls from flight attendants and passengers enabled investigators to piece together the events on board each plane and how the hijackings occurred. 3. Light passenger loads made it easier for the hijackers to maneuver American 11, bound from Boston to Los Angeles, had 81 passengers on board out of a possible 158, according to the 9/11 report and aircraft data. United 175, which also left Boston for Los Angeles, had 56 passengers out of apossible 168. That was a "load factor" of 33%, considerably lower than the 49% average for that flight, a federal investigation showed. American 77, headed to Los Angeles from Washington, had 58 passengers out of a capacity of 176, the 9/11 report and other reports said. United 93, bound from Newark, N.J., to San Francisco, had only 37 passengers for a 20% load factor, which was far below the normal 52%. 4. Missing hijacker made it easier for United 93 passengers to storm the cockpit This is the only one of the four hijacked flights that did not strike its intended target, the U.S. Capitol. Some of that is because it was the only one that had four hijackers instead of the five that took down American 11, American 77 and United 175. “The operative likely intended to round out the team for this flight, Mohamed al Kahtani, had been refused entry by a suspicious immigration inspector at Florida’s Orlando International Airport in August,” the 9/11 report said. As the passengers were just seconds away from getting into the cockpit, the hijacker at the controls crashed the plane in an empty field in Shanksville, Pa., just 20 minutes flying time from Washington. 5. The World Trade Center had been targeted before New York’s World Trade Center held an iconic status for terrorists even before 9/11. Shortly after noon on Feb. 26, 1993, a bomb planted in a van parked in the center’s underground parking garage exploded, killing six people and wounding more than 1,000, the 9/11 report said. “The bombing signaled a new terrorist challenge, one whose rage and malice had no limit,” the 9/11 report said. “Ramzi Yousef, the Sunni extremist who planted the bomb, said later that he had hoped to kill 250,000 people.” 6. Vice President Cheney ordered United 93 to be shot down Before the passengers forced the crash of United 93, then-vice president Dick Cheney gave the approval for the plane to be shot down before it could reach Washington, the 9/11 report said. “The Vice President authorized fighter aircraft to engage the aircraft,” the report said. However, the report added, the Air Force fighters that were airborne at the time probably would not have found and reached United 93 in time. Military “officials have maintained consistently that had the passengers not caused United 93 to crash, the military would have prevented it from reaching Washington, D.C.,” the 9/11 report said. “That conclusion is based on a version of events that we now know is incorrect.” 7. Earlier plots also targeted commercial aircraft Ramzi Yousef, who planned the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, had planned a massive attack on 12 U.S. airliners over the Pacific in 1995, the 9/11 report said. Yousef worked with his uncle, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, to devise the plot, the report said. Mohammed later became one of the masterminds of 9/11. Yousef was arrested in Islamabad, Pakistan, on Feb. 7, 1995, after an accomplice turned him in, the report said. The Manila plot was never carried out. 8. The U.S. worked on multiple attempts to kill Osama bin Laden before 9/11 The CIA and other agencies developed a plan to capture bin Laden in early 1998, the report said. That was delayed and then revived, but it was hampered by concerns from military officials about relying on Afghan tribal leaders. Then-national security adviser Sandy Berger was concerned about what would be done with bin Laden if he was captured and whether the evidence against him could lead to a criminal conviction in a U.S. court. After the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed on Oct. 8, 1998, President Bill Clinton authorized cruise missile strikes against bin Laden’s compound in Afghanistan. He survived but was later killed by a Navy SEAL team in May 2011. 9. The CIA warned President Clinton about hijackings in 1998 In the Dec. 4, 1998, President’s Daily Brief from the CIA, the agency told Clinton that “Bin Ladin Preparing to Hijack US Aircraft and Other Attacks.” The plan, the agency said, was to hijack the planes to gain the release of Yousef and other terrorists, the 9/11 report said. 10. Some other facts that are kept confidential for now and will be posted later. When the 9/11 report was released in 2004, 28 pages of material remained classified and the subject of intense speculation about their contents. Those pages, which were released in July and will be posted later. |

Dr. Anurita Kapur was invited to and attended LEIBNIZ LECTURE: PHOTONIC TECHNOLOGIES IN HUMAN-MACHINE-INTERACTION on September 14, 2016, at the German Mission, New York. Leibniz Lecture: Photonic Technologies in Human-Machine-Interaction Modern cars are able to warn us when we are too close to the car behind us while parking. Driverless transport systems in factories are able to deliver finished goods just in time to be sold. Today, new technologies driven by digitalization and artificial intelligence are changing the way humans interact with machines. In the future, next-generation devices and machines will be more sophisticated, ensuring an even higher degree of collaboration. As a key enabling technology, optics and photonics play a critical role in addressing many of the challenges humans face when interacting with machines. Photonic sensors that measure three-dimensional objects, people, and scenes will empower machines to monitor their environment. Prof. Dr. Tünnermann discussed novel trends in 3D sensing and the implementation of these sensors in robotics as well as advanced imaging systems based on the insect eye principle. |

Dr. Anurita Kapur was invited to she attended screening of "The Uncondemned" held on October, 2016, at United Nations Headquarters in New York. THE UNCONDEMNED -- a Michele Mitchell/Nick Louvel film (2016) -- is a riveting documentary about a group of young lawyers and activists who defied the odds to do what had never been done: prosecute rape as an act of genocide before an international court, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. This is the story of their relentless fight for that landmark conviction, revealing for the first time the three Rwandan women who bravely came forward to testify despite the danger. THE UNCONDEMNED captures the remarkable story of determination, resilience and courage that forever changed the course of international judicial history and gave birth to hope and justice for all victims of genocide and sexual violence in conflict. The screening was followed by a panel discussion with the co-director of the film, the leading trial lawyer in the Akayesu case, two Rwandan genocide survivors featured in the film, the founder of the Free Yezidi Foundation, and a Yezidi survivor of ISIL (Da'esh) atrocities in Iraq. (Organized by the Permanent Mission of Rwanda to the United Nations and the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict). |

"Negotiating Nuclear Disarmament: Clarifying the Law." A number of important legal questions have been raised in the course of the discussions regarding nuclear disarmament, including the context of the open-ended Working Group (OEWG) convened in Geneva during 2016. The key questions that arose and discussed were: (1) Would the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) be undermined by a new nuclear disarmament? The Vienna Convetion on the Law of Treaties in 1969 (VCLT). (2) Could such a treaty be put in place as an amendment to the NPT or through a Protocol to that Treaty? (3) What is "the legal gap" in the NPT and why does it matter? The weapons of mass distructions are subject to universal and comprehensive legal prohibitions - this is not the case of nuclear weapons. (4) What does "good faith" In Article VI of the NPT require? (5) Can a legally-binding prohibition on nuclear weapons make an effective contribution to nuclear disarmament? Dynamic drawn from the disarmament/arms control sphere include the 1925 Geneva Protocol and the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Treaty 1997 (Ottawa Convention). VVIP High-level Attendees: H.E. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon (right), is seen here with Secretary-General-designate António Guterres, just before the General Assembly meeting to appoint him by acclamation the next Secretary-General of the United Nations |
13 October 2016 | The UN General Assembly today appointed by acclamation the former Prime Minister of Portugal, António Guterres, as the next United Nations Secretary-General, to succeed Ban Ki-moon when he steps down on 31 December. Mr. Guterres, aged 67, was Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees from June 2005 to December 2015. He will become the world's top diplomat on 1 January 2017, and hold that post for the next five years. Adopting a consensus resolution put forward by its President, Peter Thomson, the Assembly acted on the recommendation on the UN Security Council, which on 6 October forwarded Mr. Guterres' name to the 193-member body as its nominee for UN Secretary-General for a five-year period, ending 31 December 2021. Ten years to the day after his own appointment as Secretary-General, Mr. Ban said: "Secretary-General-elect Guterres is well known to all of us in the hall. But he is perhaps best known where it counts most: on the frontlines of armed conflict and humanitarian suffering," referring to his time as head of the UN refugee agency. |
Noting that he has long valued his advice, and long admired his spirit of service, Mr. Ban declared: "He is a wonderful choice to steer this Organization as we build on the progress of the past decade, while addressing the insecurity and uncertainties of today's world." Frederick Musiiwa Makamure Shava, President of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), also congratulated Mr. Guterres on his election, saying that the Secretary-General-designate "is a strong humanitarian advocate and a successful leader," and that he looks forward to working with him. The Assembly's resolution also welcomed the historic process Member States set in motion late last year: the selection of a new United Nations Secretary-General, traditionally decided behind closed-doors by a few powerful countries, has for the first time in history, involved public discussions with each candidate campaigning for the world's top diplomatic post. These so-called 'informal briefings' between the candidates, UN Member States and civil society representatives kicked off on 12 April, when the first three candidates presented their 'vision statements' and answered questions on how they would promote sustainable development, improve efforts to create peace, protect human rights, and deal with huge humanitarian catastrophes should they be selected to lead the Organization. Mr. Ban also praised UN Member States for the selection process and emphasized that it "opened the [selection] process to the world."He further noted that the new steps taken this year established a new benchmark of openness and engagement. |
Secretary-General-designate, António Guterres, addresses the General Assembly on the occasion of his appointment as the next Secretary-General of the United Nations |
The selection process included, for the first time in the history of the Organization, public hearings with the General Assembly where candidates presented their vision and responded to the questions fielded by the Member States. These informal hearings were also televised and webcast. The process started off with a joint call from the Presidents of the General Assembly and the Security Council formally soliciting candidates and from the outset, acknowledged the importance of geographic and gender balance in senior posts. For his part, Assembly President Thomson highlighted that the selection process underscored the principles of transparency and inclusivity. "It was a process that specifically sought out candidates who embody a firm commitment to the purposes and principles of the [UN] Charter; who exemplify the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity; and who have proven leadership and managerial abilities, extensive experience in international relations, and strong diplomatic, communication and multilingual skills," said Mr. Thomson in his remarks. "I am confident that Mr. Guterres will serve the global community with dedication, as a moral authority, and be the voice of our collective conscience and humanity, throughout his term," he added. Assuring the Secretary-General-designate of his full support throughout the present session of the General Assembly, the body's President stressed that he would do everything within his power to facilitate a smooth transition. In this context, Mr. Guterres will be participating in a meeting called by President Thomson, on 19 October, to discuss with the General Assembly the critical, priority and emerging issues for the global Organization. |
